Velcro® Brand Fasteners & Hook-and-Loop Closures
Our Velcro® brand sew-on tape offers reliable hook-and-loop fastening for garments, home décor, and everyday repairs. This professional-grade tape is designed for permanent attachment to fabric, canvas, and heavy-duty textiles.
You’ll find this tape ideal for waistband closures, cushion covers, outdoor gear, and projects where traditional buttons or zippers aren’t practical. The sew-on design ensures the fastener stays secure through repeated washing and heavy use.
Each roll features distinct hook and loop sides that lock together with an audible click and separate easily when needed. We stock standard widths from ¾” to 2″ in white, black, and beige to match your fabric.

Choosing the Right Velcro® Fastener for Your Project
We stock four main types of Velcro® brand hook-and-loop fasteners at JOANN, each designed for specific applications. Sew-on tape provides the most durable attachment for garments and fabric projects that will be laundered frequently. Iron-on tape offers a no-sew alternative that works beautifully on medium to heavyweight cotton and polyester fabrics.
Sticky back fasteners are your best choice for mounting lightweight items to hard surfaces like walls, cabinets, and plastic organizers. These adhesive-backed squares and strips eliminate the need for screws or nails. Heavy-duty outdoor tape delivers industrial strength for boat covers, patio furniture, and automotive applications that face constant weather exposure.

Application & Installation Tips
For sew-on Velcro® tape, we recommend using a heavy-duty needle (size 90/14 or 100/16) and polyester thread that matches your fabric color. Stitch around all four edges of each strip, placing stitches about ⅛” from the edge. Backstitch at the start and end of each seam to prevent unraveling.
Iron-on tape requires a household iron set to the cotton setting with steam turned off. Place the hook or loop strip adhesive-side-down on your fabric, cover with a pressing cloth, and apply firm pressure for 90 seconds. Allow the bond to cure for 24 hours before laundering.
Care & Maintenance for Long-Lasting Performance
Sew-on and iron-on Velcro® fasteners are machine washable in warm water with standard laundry detergent. We recommend closing hook-and-loop strips before washing to prevent the hook side from catching on other garments. Tumble dry on medium heat or line dry.
Over time, lint and thread fibers accumulate in the hook side of Velcro® tape, reducing its gripping strength. Clean hooks periodically by picking out debris with a fine-tooth comb or stiff brush. For stubborn buildup, use tweezers to remove individual threads.

Questions About Velcro® Brand Fasteners
Velcro® is the original brand-name hook-and-loop fastener invented in the 1940s. Genuine Velcro® brand products at JOANN use higher-quality nylon that maintains stronger grip through more open-close cycles compared to generic alternatives.
Velcro® brand fasteners are engineered to specific tension and durability standards. You’ll notice the difference in holding strength and longevity, especially for projects that face frequent use or washing.
Yes, both sew-on and iron-on Velcro® tape are machine washable and dryer-safe. We recommend closing the hook and loop sides together before washing to prevent the hooks from catching on other fabrics in the load.
Wash in warm water on a regular cycle and tumble dry on medium heat. The fasteners will maintain their grip through hundreds of wash cycles when properly installed.
Standard sew-on and iron-on Velcro® tape holds approximately 10 pounds per square inch when properly attached to fabric. Adhesive-backed sticky back fasteners support up to 5 pounds per square inch on smooth, clean surfaces.
Heavy-duty outdoor tape delivers approximately 15 pounds per square inch of holding strength. For vertical mounting applications, we recommend using 50% more fastener area than calculated minimum to provide a safety margin.
Velcro® brand sticky back fasteners use a strong adhesive that may remove paint when you pull them off the wall. For temporary mounting on painted drywall, we recommend removable adhesive strips designed specifically for wall hanging.
If you need the convenience of hook-and-loop fasteners on walls without paint damage risk, attach one side to your wall décor item and use removable mounting squares on the wall side instead of adhesive-backed Velcro.
Yes, iron-on Velcro® works well on polyester and cotton-polyester blend fabrics. Set your iron to the polyester or synthetic setting rather than full cotton heat to avoid melting the fabric fibers.
For best results on 100% polyester, place a cotton pressing cloth between the iron and the Velcro tape. Apply firm pressure for a full 90 seconds and allow 24 hours for the adhesive to cure before use.
You’ll find Velcro® brand fasteners in the notions aisle near zippers, buttons, and elastic. We stock sew-on tape by the yard on rolls at the cutting counter, plus pre-packaged iron-on, sticky back, and heavy-duty varieties on peg hooks.
Our online store at JOANN.com offers our complete Velcro® inventory with the option to ship to your home or pick up at your local store. Check product pages for real-time stock availability at nearby locations.
Use a fine-tooth comb or stiff brush to rake out accumulated lint and thread fibers from the hook side of Velcro® tape. Work in the direction opposite to the hooks, pulling debris up and out.
For stubborn buildup, tweezers work well for removing individual threads caught deep in the hooks. Regular cleaning every few months maintains maximum gripping strength and extends the fastener’s functional life.
